MAIZE

Pro AgroWorld is currently producing Longe 5 variety. This variety has a potential yield of 2.4 tons/ha, which provides a much higher potential yield than seeds currently being utilized by local farmers. Farmers should clear the fields and plough the land early before the onset of the rains to ensure that the maize will not compete with weeds for nutrients.

Planting should take place at the onset of the rains to maximize yields. Farmers should plant quality seeds which guarantee germination and production. If crops are planted at recommended spacing, the plants cover the ground quickly reducing the need for weeding.

Proper spacing of about 75cm between the rows and 25cm between the columns of plants should be used to avail enough water, nutrients and sunlight for the plants. One seed per hole will give optimum plant population.

Weeding to maintain a weed free field is important for a healthy crop. Perennial weeds which are always in a maize garden all time every year. They multiply through roots and stems e.g. couch grass. Mechanical weeding only cuts off the tops but the bottom continue consuming the nutrients and water meant for the maize plants.

These should be controlled early before the beginning of the season as later attempt to control them will damage the crop. Stalk borer control should be done using the right chemicals to reduce damage and post-harvest losses.

Harvested crop should be dried to specific moisture and stored properly to avoid any weevil damage.
